Stigma and Discrimination – Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division

To me it seems quite strange that when a person has a serious physical illness many people’s reaction is to go to their aid. If a person has cancer we see many people running awareness campaigns or giving to the cause to try to help them. If a person has a mental illness we don’t see many people have that same reaction. In fact very much to the detriment of those afflicted, a stigma is attached to mental illness. I can’t help but wonder just how much that stigma frustrates the treatment of those who have mental illness. I can’t help but wonder how many people would seek help, which exists, if they weren’t afraid of the stigma.
